Medication And Mood Changes

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I just want to know if all seizure medications can cause mood changes? The reason for my asking is because my mood and attitude seems to change a lot and my wife gets upset at me because I get so moody, upset for no reason, or my whole attitude seems to change which I don't know why. My wife tells me to just relax which I thought I was doing but I'm not sure why my mood changes.

I've read a lot of seizure medications can, and often do, cause mood swings, anger, depression, outbursts, and many other psychological side-effects. I always check this before starting medications.

Many upon many for me. I usually can tell right away. I am usually a happy, laughing, and sarcastic person. 😉

I only used Epilim. I am certain that this was the cause for my mood changes as nothing changed apart from adding this drug into my daily life. I got a lot of anger and was aggressive at times without cause or anything to light the fuse. I just lost control of my feelings and eventually learned to ignore it and then over the years I lost my ability to feel emotion apart from anger. - If you are experiencing mood swings I suggest you try other medications or other approaches. I took everything into my own hands and decided to go drug-free. Now I feel better off and it has taken years to fix. I feel that I am still broken inside but I now laugh and feel happy and I couldn't feel these emotions before!!! :)

Most seizure medications do alter your mood. Keppra was the worst for me. I listen to my kids about my moods because I didn't see it with Keppra but I was quick to snap and then be so sad. It was bad. Speak with your doctor about it.

Different meds can change your personality just like drugs do- I suppose not as drastically but definately. It may or may not be that. but you have been going through a lot of stress too stress releases hormones and toxins into your body and can change your brain chemistry too. You may have some anxiety from it. Alvin, I have anxiety and even though I can go through a day seemingly not depressed or seeing anythingbad about my life- I can get mood swings from the anxiety. All of the sudden get very irritable, go from being friendly, to closed off and anxious. My husband told me a few times after I had started my new med that he thought I needed help and I was acting crazy. So I looked up my meds and figured out I was not taking them when I was suppose to. (Suppose to be every twelve hours and I was taking it every 24) so when it was Waring off I was getting the mood swings and not acting like myself. I'vehad many problems since taking my meds that I didn't have before that have to do with my personality and mood and stress and anxiety
