Overview
Diacomit is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of seizures associated with Dravet syndrome, a rare and severe form of epilepsy. It is prescribed as an add-on therapy for individuals who are 6 months of age or older, have a minimum weight of 15 pounds, and are already taking clobazam. Diacomit has not been studied or approved as a standalone treatment for Dravet syndrome. Diacomit is also known by its drug name, Stiripentol.

Diacomit is an anticonvulsant that is believed to work by increasing gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter (chemical messenger) that helps calm overactive brain activity. It also affects enzymes in the liver, leading to increased levels of clobazam, which enhances seizure control.

How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that Diacomit is taken orally, either as a capsule or a powder for oral suspension. The medication is typically divided into two or three doses per day, depending on the patient’s age and weight. Capsules should be swallowed whole with a glass of water during a meal and should not be opened or broken. The oral suspension should be mixed with water and consumed immediately with a meal. To avoid withdrawal effects, the dose should be reduced gradually under the supervision of a healthcare provider. Diacomit should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider.

Side effects
Common side effects of Diacomit include drowsiness, decreased appetite, agitation, ataxia (unsteady movements), weight loss, hypotonia (low muscle tone), nausea, tremors, dysarthria (difficulty speaking), and insomnia (difficulty sleeping).

Rare but serious side effects may include neutropenia (low levels of white blood cells), thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), severe weight loss, suicidal thoughts or behaviors, and withdrawal seizures if the medication is stopped abruptly. Individuals with phenylketonuria (PKU) should be aware that Diacomit for oral suspension contains phenylalanine.
