Video Eeg

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

I go in Friday for the video EEG. What should I expect? I asked if they were shaving my head, they said no, but using glue, and will have to remove it with acetone! They also said someone had to be with me 24/7. Advice please, I haven't received my "packet" yet...

Hello,
Our son (age 7) has had numerous in-hospital EEGs. While my comments are coming from me as a parent I feel like I can say with some confidence that the worse part about the whole process is being stuck in your room (due to your the wires on your scalp being attached too the monitor). One thing to remind yourself of is that there is really no pain involved! Also, keep telling yourself that this inconvenience is really a positive thing because YOU are taking one GIANT STEP toward figuring out your seizures. God Bless! You can do this! Also, the acetone is really no different than removing finger nail polish....so don't worry about that part. It's just cold...that's it. One final comment: Ask the EEG tech at discharge to give you some adhesive remover packets to take home (Unisol is the brand name we've used in the past). Baby oil and other greasy goo removers also can be helpful.

don't worry, they put these things with a glue all around your head and the just take readings, they prefer that you don't have much sleep the night before. After they get the readings they will give them to your doctor and he will explain everything to you and if need be put you on some medication that might help control your seizures and he will probably have to experiment with medications until he finds right ones. I had to sign some papers and let the DMV know my situation but have never been restricted from driving. The one thing you want to do is get online and check out everything about epilepsy and get educated so that you can educate your family and friends. Above all don't be ashamed, there's nothing you could do to prevent it and anybody at any time could become epileptic from the right conditions. If you let people know that you are not ashamed and show them epilepsy won't stop you from doing that you have always done and then they will begin to understand. I had lots of support from my family and friends. I never have felt like anyone pitied me are treated me any different. Good luck and don't worry. I am adding you to my team in case you would like to talk.

If it is a multi day stay in hospital/clinic then they will use what I call "airplane glue" rather than the paste used for the short EEG's. Don't have to do anything with your hair. If you have longer hair sometimes the staff can be great and braid it when wiring you up.
I didn't "need" to have anybody in the hospital room when I was there, but family insisted on being there.

BRING THINGS TO DO. Movies, books, laptop, MP3, crafts... They might not allow you to have the laptop on top of you (use dinner tray) because of "noise" it can cause in the signals being recorded.

You will know better than us if they will keep your meds or taper them. I had 3 Video EEG's and they only tapered the meds the final time in. **Speculating** they may just be looking at where your seizures originate and if it stays or spreads to the other hemisphere.

You will find out at the facility what accommodations are. For bathing I've had both the heated wipes and a spray on (no water needed) method to clean up.
