Seizure Alert Dogs

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone thought about getting a seizure alert dog? Here lately I have had my seizures frequently so I can't drive but I have almost had a couple seizures in the store so I am getting kind of nervous about what to do if that happens...it's making me just want to stay home away from people so my husband suggested a service dog that might help me get my independence and confidence back....thoughts?

Thanks Jeff. I am kind of in your shoes. I have had photosensitivity epilepsy for 22 years. All of that time I have been able to work and live fairly independant with a seizure here and there. But everything started declining last July and it almost seems everyday after is getting worse. I have had in the past 4 months had 11 grand mals in my dr.'s exam room, 7 of those happened last Thursday where they ambulanced me up north 45 minutes to a better equipped hospital. There was a time where I could go a year to five years in between seizures...now they are daily. Hopefully I won't get lost in the SSID jumble and they will see I need help for right now and also get a grant to help me train our dog so I can once again outside my home without being afraid. Thanks for your input!

A dog can not be trained to Alert an oncoming seizure- that is learned by instinct.
Stephanie- do you want a service dog or a therapy dog/ emotional support animal? Big difference. Service dogs go with you everywhere, therapy dogs/ ESAs' stay home and offer emotional support.

I had to quit work due to frequency of seizures. I don't leave the house without my dog.

Absolutely, she started to "know", and was acting out of sorts. She has never been wrong.
She always had s hard time relaxing when I went to work, I'm told.
We found a trainer , but had to talk to many to find the right kind.
My dog graduated 16 months ago.
