Keppra And Frisium During Pregnancy

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi Everyone,

I've had JME epilepsy for 20 years. I was always on Epilim which kept me pretty well seizure free. A while back, my fiancé and I decided that we would change meds as recommended by my neurologist so that we can have a baby.

It wasn't as easy as first expected and I had a couple of seizures, trying to transfer over to Keppra. My neuro added Frisium which seems to have worked and I'm now over a year seizure free.

I am also now 19 weeks pregnant. Reaching the half way mark, I am… read more

I was on both when I had my son and he is a healthy, happy 18 year-old now. No problems but I didn’t breastfeed either of my children b/c of my meds. Congrats!

Hi Laura!
congratulations :-) I was on tegretol for my 1st child which apparently had a higher 'risk' of birth defects so took high doses of folic acid to try and counter that risk, thankfully my daughter came out fine, my neuro subsequently moved me across to lamictal as it was deemed 'safer' again high levels of folic acid was advised.
unfortunately I hadn't tried keppra at that stage and wasn't on frisium, so can't give you any specific feedback :-(
so happy for you that you are pregnant and 1 year seizure free! that is awesome news, best wishes for the remainder of your pregnancy xxx

If Keppra is working for you at the time. I had been on Keppra for almost 15 years, but then I started having like Narcolepsy like problems. One day I went for my 5 mile walk that I had taken everyday. And then one day half asleep one of the local mechanics and a friend that owns his own shop. He brought me home because he had told my partner that I was sound asleep in the middle of the crosswalk at the intersection of Virginia and Needham here in Modesto California. But now I need to say that it did work for me the very BEST throughout most of the 15 years but then I was on a very good dose of under 2,000 mg. per day. And at first and I was seizure free for 11 to 12 years then I actually could fall asleep walking or standing behind other people at the checkout line at the Market.

I was on phenobarbitone when I had my Daughter many moons ago, but I could only have the one as I was then put on Epanutin and then there was a scare that they could cause malformed babies. Also I could not breast feed. Good luck xxxx
