Can I Take Cold/flu Medication With My Epilepsy Medication?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I currently have a really bad cold, and possibly tonsillitis too. Can I take like cold/flu tablets or syrups?
I take 2x 100mg lamotrigine in the morning
2x 50mg of lamotrigine in the evening
An 1 10mg before bed.

I've tried booking a doctors appointment but they are fully booked.

Cold and flu medicines have increased frequency of seizures for me short term. 1) don't take anything with DM on the label. 2)nasacort for your nose, 3) bronchial inhaler like proform to dry out lungs, if it goes bacterial, 4) see gp if goes bacterial and tell him all meds in use and get an anti biotic. 5) get a flu shot in October.

When I took cough medicine, allergy meds, headache meds, and other over the counter meds , i would take them at least an hour before or after taking my AED meds.

Neurologist told me that antihistamines (Zyrtec) are ok for my hubby but *no* decongestants. He is on Topamax and Trileptal. I would ask your neurologist due to a possible drug interaction in your case. Feel better. Nasal spray saline only was ok as well

Go on drugs.com enter meds you're taking along with the cold med you want to take it will tell u if there is a major interaction but I've always been told to stay away from antihistamines ..or better yet call your pharmacist that's probably safest just cause one person hasn't experienced a reaction doesn't mean u won't. I'm on4 different meds I took Tylenol cold yesterday. and today decided 2look up info interacted with every one of my meds .especially the dm. I'm fortunate i didn't seize.
