Has Your Memory Gotten Worse Or At Least Memory Recall The Longer You Have Had Epilepsy?
I would appreciate from those of you on long-term seizure free state or great operations such that you do not take the medication. Likewise, I would like to hear from those who have reached a long-term seizure free state on alternative treatment, and what your memory (memory recall, short-term memory or long-term memory) whatever has been hampered gotten any better or worse.
Finally, the same questions for those of medication too.
And have any of you noticed any time changes to other basic… read more
Short term is worse long term I use photography to remember
John, as you know, I have been seizure free for a number of years (although I have recently wondered). But my memory, recall and short term mostly, and my cognitive function in particular (strategizing or organizing), have continued to slow down (seeming to accelerate as I get older). Now some of that I know is the meds, that’s unavoidable. Any substance acting through brain cells in any way will, just look at what alcohol did to me. But remember, the epilepsy itself kills brain cells.
Having gone through the cognitive rehab before, as I believe you have, I know there exists a plasticity in there. I can’t tell you when it will wear out. I feel like mine has right now, but some of that may be my depression talking. Mood also plays an intrinsic role in cognitive and memory function. I’m fully expecting CTE from my traumatic brain injury at any moment, as well. I can tell you they’ve proven that your brain does continue to make new cells of various types as an adult (contrary to the old theories).
Maybe it’s all a reminder to enjoy the moment, something I’m not very good at?
To be continued…
Actually, even someone who has been seizure-free for decades, is not free of the other features of Epilepsy. One of those is hampering memory. And along with that, as the psychologist told us in the Memory course, every persons memory recall decreases that others, though there are some of us (epileptics and others ) who loose it quicker.
I had ep since age 6 but never lost my menory or down time as I was a normal kid outgoing with others even drive my own car but was cautsion to, then got married 23 worked at GM 30 yrs and became sz free May 1998 going on 24 yrs sz free now and retired from GM as electrician
How is this approach working out Michael?
I missed 2 of the classes but the psychologist pointed out that (except for people with Dementia or a very rare brain damage to the long-term damage), the only part of the memory which changes with age or illness or Epilepsy is memory recall quality.
