Is It Common For People With Epilepsy To Have "unremarkable" Brain Scan? Why Did The MRI Say "chronic Migraine"?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Miami, FL

I had an MRI done and was told it was to check for seizures but it says "chronic migraine" and "unremarkable" on it. It is saying my brain is normal size and shape, do others with epilepsy get this result?

My PCP believes I have epilepsy but I have NOT been put on any medications for seizures. 2 of my bipolar medications Lexapro and Trilepal are sometimes used as seizure medications but I was told it was only prescribed for bipolar and nothing else. I have these seizures nearly every day and did the EEG and MRI to try to find out why and get on medications. I am Aspergers and have Lyme disease so I am high risk for epilepsy. I want this treated immediately.

I have archnoid cysts on the fronto-temporal region of my brain and the neurologists have told me for over a decade, almost 25 years that it's normal. Now, my new epilepsy doctor, first epilepsy neurologist, had made notes on my first appointment notes she took that have photos of my brain mri scans. She noted, "volume L>R". I guess they do not want to tell me what they think or they don't know.

Toni3,
When I broke out from the iodine based contrast medium, I was questioned about shellfish allergies. At that time I wasn't aware I had shellfish allergies because I grew up eating crab, etc. The tech told me that my reaction to the dye meant I am allergic to shellfish.
I suggest you tell medical people about that past allergy. They can use a different type dye or give you meds to take to avert an allergic reaction.
PS I just saw your post about shellfish allergy on your chart. I'm glad. BTW sometimes they have to use that dye. That note helps protect you. ALSO mention it to any doctor requesting the test, as a reminder, before they order the test. .

I'm allergic to iron, not iodine to my knowledge.
