Lack Of Sleep

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Australia

I find myself constantly lacking sleep, but feel so tired, I try to stay in a regular routine, but my mind is in constant overdrive, I have focal epilepsy, (TLE) recently resigned from my job at the blood bank due to so much discrimination, even though my condition never affected my work, I was continually hounded by management telling me I shouldn’t be doing this job, I have been very stable seizure wise, and cleared by my neurologist and GP’, but was stood down indefinitely for reasons not yet… read more

Thanks @A MyEpilepsyTeam Member
AED’s that are prescribed here in Australia are not the same as in the US I guess, we don’t have as many options yet that are available, it takes years for approval here for some reason, I have read that Keppra can have side affects, previously tried a few others, Tegretol, Epilim, both had notorious side effects, blistering of skin and eyes and extremely high LFT’s, all of the AED’s I’ve been on make me so tired, but Keppra not as bad as the others, just wondering if I’m overly stressed out

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member, there are a lot of AEDs available. The hard part is knowing which ones will control your type of seizures without giving you terrible side effects. And whether or not they will conflict with other medications or vitamin supplements you are taking right now. As ProudTx mentioned, Keppra can be pretty bad for some.

Thanks @A MyEpilepsyTeam Member.
I had recent blood work done,
Levels were fine but my WCC low, neutrophils low, sugar just on the boarder of diabetes, and high cholesterol and trigs, high liver function and a few other things were low also, GP days it’s fine, I’m not convinced it is,
Been going through so much work stress which has made everything feel so overwhelming and never ending,

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , I did see that you have been on Keppra for a while. The side effects might be catching up with you. Have you been on the same dosage for a good while & not have any blood work done lately to check your blood level for your Keppra? If not then that’s still you might also mention to your doctor. I say this because I had been on the same dosage of Depakote for years & I went a year or so without having any blood work done because I didn’t have any insurance for several months & then in December 2018 I began having some awful shaking in my arms & right leg & as the months progressed the shaking got worse & in late May 2019 I went to our Family clinic After Hours & luckily my former Family doctor saw me cause he knows about my seizures & he saw I hadn’t had blood work done in almost a year & so he had me do blood work for my meds & the blood level for my Depakote was at 135 & normal is between 50 to 100 & so he adjusted my dosage & several months later the shaking stopped but in June or July 2029 I began having verbal tics for some reason. I say or holler words, names, phrases or humming or moaning noises uncontrollably & I don’t know what caused them & they occur daily & are more active when I’m around others. So, if you haven’t had any blood work done lately for your meds, you might talk to your doctor about that. Since all medications can effect everyone differently, it’s hard to say that one is better than the other, especially being that some might react to the side effects of a medication & others might have little if any problems with the side effects of a medication. I think some on here have mentioned that Depakote has made them gain weight or loose their hair but I haven’t had any issues with that. It was the Topamax that made me loose to much weight & so I had to get off it. The Dilantin is one that several on here have said they’ve had dental issues with it & my Dad did also & so it’s one that I don’t recommend. The Dilantin & Keppra are two meds that many have experienced similar side effects. Your friend in Texas, Becky
