Generic V Brand Keppra (levetiracetam)

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Are there any major differences between the Generic and Brand Keppra? I was put on Keppra just over a month ago and I have a feeling I'm meant to be on generic. When I first got my script filled the pharmacist gave me the generic version and because I've always had the brand versions of everything else I've been, I'm not sure whether the Neuro does want me on the generic or not but it's just the way the script is worded.

If it does turn out to be the case though and I am meant to be the… read more

Generic medication works perfectly for some people. But not for everyone. I was taking regular keppra for a long period of time with no problems. The insurance company decided they wanted to give me generic medication so they could save themselves some money. I was not told about this, so slowly the number of seizures began to increase. Eventually a 911 call had to be made because for some reason the generic medication did not for me. A very uncomfortable stay in the hospital. So please be careful

I was told by the doctor do not take generic. On generic they may have a tiny bit of difference in the amount of what they put in drugs

I found the generic don't work as well. My scripts are capped so I choose the brand. I had anaplaxist to 1 generic because of the difference was brand plain generic yellow. Pharmacists have told me while the main ingredient is the same the base is usually different and that can cause issues.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member I've had a few pharmacy workers offer me the generic option over the years and I've always said no. The script system has actually been updated overhear so that if you are on a med where you can only have a specific version the system automatically ticks it whether that be brand or generic. So this problem is all but stopped now. It's just that this is a new med for me so it's basically still in the change-over phase. In a few weeks, I will find out how they want it but for now, the scripts say I'm on the generic version but I'm taking brand.
