How Many People With Epilepsy Have Been Medically Laid Off From Work Due To Epilepsy?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Woodburn, OR

My epilepsy is currently treated with medication.

But, as I have aged, I experience more complications that are connected to my seizures.

Migraines, anxiety depression, fatigue and light sensitivity.

My medical team has put me on intermittent leave to deal with this.

That’s a long time with one company and it probably feels more personable since you’ve known them all for so many years like family members. Maybe the time away from work will help give you time to get healthier mentally, physically and emotionally without worrying about neglecting your job duties.
It doesn’t mean you weren’t able to do your job properly I really believe its more about the company protecting their liability than protecting the dedicated hardworking employees and this sucks!!
I was fortunate enough to work with a company that was there for me and although I realized it then it didn’t really resonate with me until reading the challenges many others face trying to get or keep their jobs due to their epilepsy😔

That's illegal I thought? I've never had a Siezure at work but if I have one at home, the doctors are required to notify employers of medical suspensions! That got the ball rolling for them, without bringing up my condition. Couldn't drive co.truck, didn't bother to even find another position. 19 yrs gone with one company. I worked for 4 other H.V.A.C Co. After each job lasted up to when they put me on co.insurance. Employers have ways of finding out what's going on, and decide at that time what to do with me,without bringing up Epilepsy.

I have had one seizure at work in 19 years.

There have been other seizures but not at work.

My seizures have been a problem since I was a child.

My old body is suffering from others issues

Migraines
Anxiety
Depression

I had intermittent FMLA to deal with this.

When it ran out I was laid off.
