National Epilepsy Awareness Month

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I read and watch tv often and I have not seen anything such as a public service announcement or fundraising campaign for epilepsy this month although November is epilepsy awareness month outside of the epilepsy social media sites. With epilepsy being one of the top brain disorders there should be some information which in turn may help the public understand epilepsy and what to do to care for a person having a seizure. It’s made me see why many people, unless you live with epilepsy, don’t have… read more

Oh yeah. I always see pink balloons and pamphlets for breast cancer. I get calls for fundraising, but nothing for us. Yes, cancer is awful, but I think purple is a pretty important color too.

You are absolutely right. We are way on the bottom of the list when it comes to our disability. When one of us does have a seizure people just look and stare at us. Some people even laugh like it is a joke. They need to take our disability more seriously just like every other disability.

I just started at Amazon at a new fulfillment center in our town. They have groups which they call Affinity Groups. They have one for disabilities and another for mental illness and well-being. I'm thinking of signing up for both and maybe can enlighten people on epilepsy. You don't have to disclose any disability, you just have to have the heart to help other people and provide them with resources to help them at work.

Yes. It’s just underfunded and lots of stereotypes. It’s frustrating for sure! I got my epilepsy shirts tho and I’m wearing them all November ❤️💜 it’s hard but together we can spread awareness. And some people will be ignorant about it we just ignore / or educate them.
I also know this month is domestic violence month so it’s being talked about more then epilepsy :( both are bad just sucks not having a good awareness

Good Morning Sonya
I agree with you. Yes, there should be fundraisers for epilepsy. Unfortunately it is a disease people don't know about. I did not know about the real seizures and nothing about epilepsy until I began having them. What people see on tv is not always the real seizures or all the type of seizures.
Unfortunately, fundraisers may not start until more people start having seizures and epilepsy. Or those of us who have this disease start fundraisers.
