How Many Have Lost "friends" Because Of Epilepsy/seizures?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have lost so many friends (well for me it was a lot) because people just didn't know or understand how epilepsy affects my mental state and moods. Or maybe they just didn't want to. I don't know. I'm just a really lonely person that has lost so much. And I hate it.

I am very sorry your friends have treated you like crap. You don’t deserve it. I have no fancy words or amazing advice, but know you have someone you can talk to.

I was never able to get many friends. I started having seizures when I was 10 years old. In high school everyone started driving and forgot all about me.

Yes, my partner has epilespy, a balance disorder, he had an ear stroke, a massive heart attack & triple CABG surgery... all in the space of 2 years... I have Multiple Sclerosis & several other co-morbidities... after both our initianl diagnosis we were inundated with calls (not visits... we reckoned some people were afraid we'd have a job for them to do if they called to the house!) all asking questions & telling us 'we'd be grand' etc etc (playing down the conditions & dismissing them as if trivial in some cases) but most of them fell away very quickly & left us to it... there's nothing like being diagnosed with a life long illness & in my case a degenerative, neurological disease to find out who your true friends are. We still have loyal friends that we could call on if we needed help, but I could count their number on my fingers! However, the quality of the friendships we do have outweigh quantity... because our true friends are worth their weight in gold... not that we call on them but to know that when they say 'call if you need anything!' they mean it & don't just say it as an off the cuff remark knowing that we won't &/or hoping that we won't! You're perfectly right... some people just don't want to try to understand how a life-long medical conditon impacts both your physical & mental health & others are to put it bluntly ignorant of the facts of a condition & have no interet in educating themselves.
