Law Enforcement And Epilepsy?
I have 8 years of LEO experience and just completed my associates degree in criminal justice. Anyone know of options for folks like me who can’t carry a gun anymore?
I have no idea what to do as I transition out of the Army.
What about Homeland Security? Maybe they have positions that don't require carrying guns.
Hope this helps….
****I do not have active seizures, only a couple around 2015 which ultimately led to my medical release from active duty, mine are also completely controlled by medication****
I encourage you to contact your states organization who is over armed security registration and licensing. In my state, North Carolina, its the PPSB. When you inquire with your licensing division, simply form your question like this “what are the medical restrictions that would stop a person from being able to be registered as an armed security guard”… my particular state mentions dependency issues like drugs/alcoholism, having a bad moral character (determined by criminal background check and the 3 references they have you add to the application), a history of temperament issues are the only ones really listed on the NC General Statues over Private Protective Services, the bulk of restrictions seem to be more focused at criminal history and does not state a medical clearance being needed and the PPSB Armed Guard registration application does not ask for a signature for the release of medical information or even a medical records disclosure notice whatsoever- if they ask what the medical condition is (they shouldn’t legally), just reform your initial question as “Im looking for a list of disqualifiers while trying to assist a veteran in potential job opportunities” of course its up to you if you want to disclose the medical condition for the most accurate answer. Please keep in mind that in most cases the registration/licensing board will likely have complete control over who they license and register on a case by case basis even though the state statue won’t mention anything about medical restrictions for armed guards, the board has the final say. Im literally attempting to do the exact same thing, looking for an Armed Guard position, 9 years of military experience (Army) as well as an Air Force Security Forces Augmentee, criminal justice major, police explorer in high school, cybersecurity cert, first aid training, numerous military awards/recognitions etc etc. I’ve decided that the worst they can say is no, and from research, as long as a security company hires you, the registration should be straight forward with the deepest part of it being a criminal background check; my biggest worry is the goofy driving restriction on my license and that leading to more questions, even though I wont be seeking any driving positions. Some companies (the big names and role depending) will send you to a doctor to find that type of stuff out as part of the application process, other companies (the smaller ones) may hire you after a 10min interview and have your firearms registration and armed guard licensing stuff done on the back end. If armed security doesn't work out then it’ll be bail recovery for myself as a side hustle while I sit comfortably in my current IT role..
Maybe as a private investigator?
School security guard ?
It’s a big step when you change from a military to a civilian life change. I remember those days.
Can the military direct you to the veterans affairs? They do help. What trade are you? I was a medic when I was released. I just had to challenge the civilian tests for being a medical assistant and a few other medical jobs.
It’s been 30 years since I have been released. I could try and help direct you through. I just don’t know how the US military goes.🌞
