Growing Up In The 60s With Epilepsy When They Talked About It It Was My Daydreaming. I Took My Pills.

One thing that bothers me looking back is I spent my childhood on bikes rollerskating that you attach to your shoes ice skating sledding skiiing and just running wild. We just had to show up for meals and before it got dark. My sister's and brother and are friends knew every inch of our neighborhood and the huge hill behind our house which was park land. No one worried that I would have a petite mal and hurt myself. Anyone else from this time zone brought up the same with seizures?

I was born in 68, the following year had a diphtheria shot that totally destroyed my life as the shot sent me into 104 degree fever. Imagine a small child having a fever so high they were rushed to the ER then put right into the ICU as my Mom has explained to me as gran mal seizures started. The fever was very difficult to lower from how it was explained to me but eventually those at the ICU were able to lower the fever and continue managing the constant flow of seizures taking place.

Long and the short of it, as I grew up going through school from grade K through 12 it wasn't easy but I made it happen. I had moments when there were seizures but I also had a group of friends that were supporters because they cared about me and my health. I graduated in 1986 and moved on with my life. The point of all the above, you will cross people in your life for a reason, some will guide you to a new destination, some will protect you from bullies. At the end of the day, each person's life journey has a purpose for meeting once and perhaps even twice at the crossroads.

My parents never made a thing of it, I wouldn't want them too, and I knew they cares. I just wanted to be me. It was only brought up as needed.
I got in fights, ran the neighborhood, did both fun stupid things, learned from many mistakes, made many friends, but that's being a kid

You grow up later than I did. We never dicussed it back in the 60s. But epilepsy changes only had absence seizures till I was 25 and than grand mal started. They got those under control I went back to work and was driving and fine for 20 years than from one day to the next I wasn't fine. Started having seizures daily. Got to the point of 5 to 6 a day. Needless to say I was home and on disability from my job. Took many different drugs and combos had to go for cognitive testing. Than I was retired and put on ssdi by my company and long term disability. They took care of getting me on ssdi. I don't think I could have done it. Now 20 more years later I had a stroke and seizures are few and far between. Before I had go/en to just breakthrough seizures with my cocktail of 4 meds. So your brain does what it will want to do regardless of what you think. I never worried I never thought about them I just took my pills I had a family and job that occupied my brain.

If your asking why your parents didn't dote over you or appear outwardly concerned, I'd say it's bc they wanted you to live your life as normal as possible, as a child w/o epilepsy, the love & concern was still there. Also, how do parents know how to deal w/ an epileptic child? It's a learn as you go thing. You do your best, & ask for help when necessary.
