My Daughter Is 13yrs Old. She Has Been Diagnosed Epileptic Since 2018.
After many test, it was found she has CACNA1A and her Dr says she is drug resistant( she is on Tegretol, Keppra, Fycompa and Rivitrol). With being drug resistant..is it necessary to be then on all these medications? Her Doctors kept on putting her on more medications but now being drug resistant, what's the purpose. And we all know the side effects of these medications especially Keppra. How does a child function with dealing with epilepsy and these medications. She has tonic clonic seizures… read more
I'm drug resistant and have a VNS implant which helps. There are so many triggers that set seizures off. I've noticed that certain sounds, smells, types of light, lack of sleep especially the needed deep sleep, stress, meds, list goes on all put seizures in motion. By recognizing the triggers and learning to avoid them helps a great deal. Good luck...

I once had the VNS but had no luck. Now I have an RNS (Neurostimulator)

I have had drug resistant seizures ever since I was 10 years old and my doctor always did the same thing. Each time I went they would raise one pill and lower another. I tried every medication in the books too but continue to have seizures. I guess maybe one medication may work better than another
I agree with Ant2, the medications may have some benefit even though she is resistant. I have a very high tolerance to many medications, but I know my life would be so much worse without them.
I’ve had Epilepsy since the Age of 2 . School was very hard for me . I had slow learning and motor skills through out my school years ( k-12 ) , most of my classes were Learning Disability ( L,D. ) . I had an IEP
( individualized Education Program ) special education case worker. Every year I did an IQ test and when it was time to meet the case worker , we would find out what my grade levels were in Reading , Math and English. They were all below the grade I was in.
Like your Daughter , I have Refractory Epilepsy ( resistance to medication ) also . I’m on 5 different medications myself . They still don’t have full control seizures. With my DBS ( deep brain stimulation ) has helped reduce my seizures, with better seizure control . I say better because I still have seizures, just not as many as I use to.
I don’t know how much of this of this helps or relates to your daughter , but this was my experiences with my Epilepsy
