Go Against Family Dr Advice And Do What I Think Is Best For Me With My Epilepsy A D Seizure Medicine?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Illinois City, IL

I'm losing weight with my 2 seizure medicines, and my family doctor suggests talking to neurologist to get off them. I explained it can't be option, as there is not even handful of seizure medicines on market left for me to try. I don't want to take chance and them not work, and I'm not a candidate for surgery to help control my seizures. So, I told my family dr I rather loose weight and add protein drinks than think about getting of my seizure medicine and try new ones

Do what works best for you and what you and your Neurologist decide together.

Normally you can't just stop the medication it has to be slowly weaned. The other issue is you really need a replacement in place for this to happen otherwise you become more venerable to having seizures. I would leave it with the Neurologist.

My 2nd opinion neurologist doesn't advice getting off my seizure medicine as can increase likelihood of seizures.
My dr was still suggesting it after I told her my neurologist doesn't advice getting off this combo as it seems to be helping with the seizures.
This combo seems to decreasing my seizures as often. I got a referral to nutritionist.
@ Bob8, I'Dr as well said most drugs won't help, so it's just trying to find right combination. Which I think I have, prior to combo it was seizures at least monthly. Since combo it's decreased to one every several months so I see has improvement. Same reason surgery not option, the seizures originate in 2 hemispheres in my brain, my left and frontotemporal lobe.

Hello ShannonElder;
I've had epilepsy for decades of my life, and have been on on so many different types of meds it's not funny, after all these years my current doctor finally told me I have a form of epilepsy that's drug resistant,
He finally found a combination that helps control or lessen the amount of seizures I get,
I'm not a candidate for surgery either because my epilepsy is in 2 hemispheres of my brain.
But I would not be looking forward to becoming a human lab rat again...
