How Can I Tell If I Had A Seizure In My Sleep

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have grand maul seizures in my sleep only it seems and im taking keppra and divalproex for them. Sometimes like today I wake up feeling super tired and weak but my wife and baby who sleep in bed with me didnt notice anything.

Is it possible to have many different kinds of seizures while I'm sleeping and is it possible im having smaller seizures while I am awake and just not aware of what they are? Are either normal?

When I woke up today I was very weak and my body felt empty. Like a ripple… read more

I have a combo of different seizure types. I have grandmal, but I also have some where I will stare off, move my head one side shake and not respond. Ill also have some where i just stare off and move my moutn. Then come to it where I last remember. Those only last maybe not even a minute sometimes. I sometimes wonder when I'm by myself and have auroa then out of it later, if I had brief episode. I only know about those of staring off when I'm with someone or on phone with someone cause I won't say anything or make weird noises and next thing I know is them asking if I'm okay and I'll be like yeah cause don't seem like anything happend. Then they will tell me about noise and them saying my name and I wouldn't respond. So I always wonder If I have some when I'm alone.

Shawn, I’ve had grand meals over the year and they just drain me. Plus leave me with a horrible headache. My muscles hurt like the devil as well . Luckily, I haven’t had one of those hit me in a good while probably in the last few years but when they do hit me, I feel like hell afterwards. The seizures act differently on people from the other you may not experience what I do when I have a grand mal hit me. Rest as much as you need to to recover from the grand mal as you probably know that they will do you in afterwards.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , Like others have mentioned above, Keppra can cause mood swings, make people angry & not act like themselves, all known as the “Keppra Rage”. Keppra can also cause excessive tiredness & possibly trouble sleeping. In 2019 I took Keppra for about 2 months & it made me so tired that I had to take a nap every day & eventually I started having trouble sleeping & so I had to get off it. I didn’t like it. So that could be one reason that you’re waking up every day so tired. You could talk to your doctor about what’s going on & they could try another medication if you want. I’ve been on Depakote for over 25 years. I’d suggest being very careful with sleeping with your baby in your bed cause y’all don’t want to roll over on them & if you have seizures while sleeping, you don’t know what you might do. I’ve gotten up & walked to my bathroom during the night when I had a seizure in my sleep & I apparently had a loss of bladder during that nocturnal seizure & walked to the bathroom & removed my feminine pad & put it in the trash with no memory of doing so & I walked back to my bed & was still in the seizure cause I had no idea of it. Well, I hope things get better but don’t hesitate to talk to your doctor if you don’t like what you’re experiencing. Your friend in Texas, Becky

I had a terrible time with Keppra. I actually went toxic on it. I ended up in the hospital with hallucinations, heart rate of 150, and pneumonia.

Keppra is known for its many side effects. I used to get these feelings too. I had to be taken off because I nor my mom couldn’t deal with the “keppra rage”. It could be possible the keppra is not at the right dosage or should be switched to a different med.
