Rinsing with mild salt water a couple times a day also helps.

Sometimes sucking on a cold ice cube may help

I found Oragel helpful. It numbs the pain and it also heals faster.

For him, I'd try cold water - ice if you feel safe about it. A Popsicle could help.

I've done that before. Rinsed my mouth at times. Took a couple weeks to heal
