How Is A 48 Home EEG Test Different Than 2 EMU's EEG's?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I've had 2 EMU with no actual seizure just a PNES non seizure. After couple seizures since my last EMU . He says due to increase activity close together, suggested a 48 home EEG test.

I had a 5 day at home EEG, and went off all my meds for it. Interictal epileptiform discharges showed up LTL and a seizure RTL. God Bless the doc who made the diagnosis and finally got me on enough meds.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , From the EEG’s I’ve done at home, I’ve stayed on my medicine during that time of the test & if you were to have a seizure where you get up & walk around at home, well, you can’t do that at the hospital during a seizure. And in the hospital they slowly take you off your Medicine & monitor you. My seizures aren’t as frequent or severe as some peoples & most but not all of my seizures occur in my sleep. In November 2019 when I began seeing my current Neurologist she wanted me to do a 3 to 5 day in hospital video EEG & though I had done regular EEG’s, I had never stayed in the hospital for an EEG. They slowly took me off my medicine for the stay in the hospital & by the end of my stay, I was told that even though I didn’t have a seizure, it was at night while I slept the EEG showed mostly Focalized seizure activity but some Generalized seizure activity. The at home EEG’s never showed anything for me I don’t think. If you do end up having the at home EEG I hope it works out for you & the doctors can help you. I wish you all the best. Your friend in Texas, Becky

I've only every done 2-3 day at home eeg tests. All I was on meds the whole time. The only difference between some of the tests I had, one I had to cut out caffeine the other test I didn't. EMU eeg tests sometimes get the patient to go off meds.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member Yep. It may only be available with the seer eeg at the moment, but it pretty much has everything you need to any small issues. The other thing is they can use a water based glue now that washes out alot easier. The old style glue doesn't need to be used. I'm not sure whether the water-based glue is becoming more mainstream yet.

This is how Seer do there at home eeg that started just before Covid but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot small things that seer are doing are adapted or taken on by other medical companies.

there is pros and cons on both. cons emu eeg test is stressfull (for some) and you have to go 'change' just to get outta the cloths and into a gown. and the smell of glue gunk. the pros are if anything goes wrong (a cord went loose) thay will re glue it on the spot. you have much more contol on the type of eeg (med decrease test, sleep deprive test, ect). at home eeg test... cons. you really have 1-2 test... a standard eeg test. if you notice that you have a loose wire, you have to drive back to the er and fix the wire and say that (in some cases) you have to start all over agian. you are still limited to your house. pros... you drive in, get 'hooked' and leave. takes 1/2 or less. you are relax. you can do whatever you want (within reson).
