Weight loss would be better than weight gain. For me, that was the hardest part. The one doctor refused to use the last medicine till he had to because I was already larger than I should be, but he had to try all medicines before surgery was considered. I finally had brain surgery after that medicine, or the VNS didn't stop the seizures completely. I am finally ten years seizure-free in another week.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member Topiramate has a major effect on the way the body puts on weight. My understanding is that it boasts metabolism leading to weight loss or hard to gain weight. It is also used as a weight loss med but whether this still happens I'm not sure. Having said all that some people have had it and somehow had weight gain but why this happens on this med I'm not sure.

The same thing that causes mind to race also ups metabolic rate of the body. Went from chubby teen to thin woman from the high hormones that also was reason for my epilepsy. Research continues as to how the brain uses all types of hormones. Can even make its own why or how is still just. unknown. Why people blame meds for all kinds of things? More important to thank our meds for control of seizures imagine how worse off we'd be with those instead.

Jak994, I wish that had been my problem as a kid. My family was always gaining weight. They are not sure what my highest weight was, but it is somewhere near 340. I have, over the last five years, lost I am down under 200. Changes in diet and adding exercise a little at a time.
