My Friend Has Been Telling Me To Get A Dog That Apparently Is Trained To Know When A Seizure Is Coming On ?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been having Drop seizures last few years. I am going to do some research on this. Apparently the dogs can sense a seizure and they nudge you to sit down.

My dog had no training, but she was sent to the animal shelter, I stopped that. I know it was her thank you. She would always cross the house and get my Mom. She outlived her breed. She was both blind and deaf at the end but she wanted to see that my brain surgery was a success. I was over a year seizure-free when she passed. I am now over ten years.

MarileeGramith I am doing very well. I am ten years seizure-free this August and I am here at a university going for my Masters degree. All things that the surgeons all thought were impossible. My senior year as a Bachelor's degree I had 12 classes and had 12 A's as grades. Including a nursing class with 106% as a final grade! Doing things they said could never be done. For me that makes me try all the harder.

There is some evidence that dogs can detect seizures before they happen due to sensing subtle changes that humans can't perceive. However, studies are inconclusive on whether dogs can reliably warn people ahead of every seizure. Even if a dog cannot predict your seizures, they can still help during and after seizures by getting help, activating medical devices, or preventing injury. So getting a seizure assistance dog could still greatly improve your safety and independence.
