Auras

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was wondering if anyone can describe what their aura feels like. I find it so difficult to put into words. When I was on the bus I just got that feeling. That's what I've called it since I was a child, a feeling as I didn't know what it was and I didn't tell anyone. It's like this nauseous feeling with a smell I can't describe but it's not a nice smell. I have this feeling in my whole head almost, twitching in my left arm and leg and i just feel so odd. It's just so bizarre. I still can't… read more

Lydia6, "that feeling" is a good way to describe an aura. I call the majority of my auras "a confused feeling". I've had auras where sounds were muffed and far off. Auras for me is a sign a bad seizure is on it's way. years back a neuro told me to take an Ativan(Lorazepam) as soon as I feel an aura. For me it will stop a bad seizure 90% of the time if I take it soon enough. Lydia the best way I would describe an aura is an abnormal feeling or sensation before a seizure. Stay safe and well

I don’t always have a seizure after I have an aura and I don’t have an aura before every seizure so auras are no warning signs for me.

Hi guys, Auras to me is a sudden sensation of emptiness, confusion,
dizziness that can be warning signs to take precaution wherever you are.
Our body becomes very sensitive to smell, taste, exposure of light and
heat. You got to find a safe place to take shelter before seizure occurs. I
was at my friends garage when I had a seizure, the 'paint smell' was too
strong. I had a seizure at the beach, it was a very hot day and my head was
exposed to a lot of 'heat'. My eyes scrolled upwards towards the 'Light'
when seizures occured flickering of fluorescent bulbs at school &
workplace, flashing lights at party's and long hours of watching Tv at
home. 'Foods' like Coffee(Caffeine) triggered seizures aswell, kept me
awake by lacking sleep. Certain ingredients like Phenylalanine in
Cooldrinks didn't agree to me. After refrained from all habits by making
certain changes, I've noticed my Auras vanished. *Also keep in mind that
certain Medication also triggered seizures that caused lots of side
effects. My Doctor had to make certain changes with medications. I hope all
this experience of mine will be of help to someone. Thanks

From what I have understood of Auras , is that they are a small form of a seizure . They are a warning sign, to let people know that a bigger seizure may come.
Then there is the sensation experiences where the person may taste , smell, or hear something that isn’t there .

Lydia, you described it very well, it gives you time to position yourself so you won't be hurt.
