Has Anyone Had An Increase Of Seizures After Epilepsy Surgery?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Pittsburgh, PA

I had epilepsy surgery about a month ago and I've actually had an increase in seizures. I am not sure why though I am still taking my medication. Has anyone else had this happen?

I had my surgery a year ago now and the seizures have basically stopped. Before the surgery, the very day before on my way to the hospital they were filming every five minutes.

Right after surgery I had two but the after that it was as if they were going to start but did not. Then gone.

Hi Naomi, I had surgery in 1995 - removal of left temporal lobe. Yes, seizures did calm down for a short time period but they picked back up again. Interestingly when that happened is shortly after the second surgery of the Vagus Nerve Stimulator device in 2008. What took the slow down of the activity was assistance from surgery in 2011. That surgery was for the Deep Brain Stimulator device to focus on both left and right side of my head.

After that surgery we began to see much promise appear as my seizures began to have control taken over them. It took a short time of finding the right settings but once found that's all that needed to be done, the DBS would do the rest in managing what to do when a seizure spike comes about. My seizures went from complex partial to absence very quickly. It is amazing how the DBS works but I absolutely love how how the device stays aware of my activity and it is always learning.

I'm going to add you onto my team so we can chat more.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member I'm not to sure what the recovery process is normally like or whether seizures is a normal part of but I do know that It can take up to 6 months if what you had is considered major brain surgery. I'm not sure what point you should start to see any change; I would probably contact your Neurologist to ask about it.
