Medication?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I personally don't think medications work, or atleast work like they did back in the days. Most doctors are just pill happy and perscribe anything and multiple things. My opinions, docs are not out to help. They are only in the profession for the money. I take my meds at night before bed(Keppra and xcopri) and still have seizures in my sleep. So I took it upon myself to start decreasing Keppra. Not only do I feel a bit better, but I'm getting some nights woth no seizures. So I feel the MEDS were… read more

I am so grateful for the antiseizure meds I have been prescribed. I spent a few years trying to find out what is wrong and getting a good regimen. It's not perfect but it's better. However, the first regimen was not right. It took a few years to find the right meds...and the right doc to prescribe them. Keep looking. The right doc and meds are out there, even if it is a moving target. Don't give up. Never give up.

The medications these days are great but.... the whole issue is that a lot of people for some reason when there first diagnosed and put on meds seem to be put on Keppra and they should really be on a different medication. Really they should consider alot more options before just trying out the latest and greatest.

I agree we are all different, medications work differently for each of us and it does take time for medications to work (and perhaps other things) to reduce our seizures and for us to feel better.
I take Keppra and have been taking it since 2018. My doctor increased my Keppra medication a few times (during COVID) and added a second antiseizure medication. It took me three years to start having fewer seizures but I also improved my high blood pressure (with medication), found ways to not have stress and lost a great deal of weight.
Talk to your doctor or every consider getting a new doctor. Sleep is very important with this condition and you increasing your medication to get sleep may not be what your condition needs. I found out I needed my back to be up for me to sleep. I now sleep in a recliner after trying the different types of pillows.

for me personally the generic form of seizure meds do NOT help me as well as brand name meds. I noticed a big difference in seizure activity (not for the better) since I was switched to generic Dilantin and generic Ativan. Something I had to learn to live with.
