Keppra Side Effects??

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi, just a question if anyone suffers from side effects of keppra and if there is a time frame before they will subside? I'm on a mixture of lamictal, zonegran and keppra. I've been on the keppra for around 4 years at a high dose 3,500mg and was advised to reduce it by my neurologist. I did this successfully by 750mg then my seizures came back so I've been upped to 3,250mg .. this was 2 months ago now and the side effects are driving me mad!! Constant nausea, vertigo, jerking of my arms (even… read more

After 14+ years of Keppra, I am on my last few days coming off it! The first eight years, I had Keppra rage without knowing that I had it! No wonder I was kicked out of Lidl's and people didn't want to be with me! And I have had to have carers! People started to question whether I was dangerous and if I could live by myself! After being reduced from 3500mg a day down to 2250mg, it took me a few months to figure myself out again! Now I will see what will happen, after starting on Briviact - an upgraded revamp! (But without the severe side effects. As long as they get you on the right dose for you, then you should be OK - but that sometimes is the difficult job - getting you on the right dose with Keppra! When starting to take it, maybe you passed through the right dosage level! That's why you were ok! But once you get too high - beware! RAGE! (And the trouble is, that doctors don't like to admit that they are wrong; if and when they are!) You are not by yourself in this problem! Well done for pressing on! Don't give up! Take care!

I have been on it almost 16 years. The only thing I notice is I have whats known as Keppra rage. Which is where I go from normal to a-hole in a matter of seconds. So severe mood swings. I stay on it because it helps me A lot. My doctor decreased the stregth and put me on Onfi. As a posative side effect of onfi is it dramatically decreased the severe mood swings.

I have been in Keppra for about 5 months I suffer from insomnia, lack of appetite, and mood swings. As far as I know if after a month you still have side effects it went to away. You should ask your doctor to such your medication.

What Keppra seems to be doing to people, I have been wondering ifit is not Vagabitrin under a different name over in the States, but to me this is very useful to know, and I will certainly tell the British Epilepsy Association about it. Thank you all, and I hope you will find something more suitable, Have a happy Christmas and I will prayfor you

It made my existing vertigo even worse. I have what is called keppra rage, meaning I can be cheery and a few seconds later am a massive a-hole. They decreased me from 3000 to 2750. I cant stop because it is one of few meds that help me. The doc then put me on "onfi". The keppra rage wasn't as bad. He then increased me back to 3000mg and added another of those onfi pills. I am still moody but not as bad.
