Grand Mal and Absence are two different types of seizures.

For some people they have an aura / absence seizure that alerts them ( warning sign ) that they might go into a bigger seizure. Doesn’t have to be a Grand Mal. It could be a Complex Partial Seizure, Simple Partial seizure and ect.

I had the grand mals when I was younger and some petit mals. Now I have the absence seizures. i dont know if it heritary or not but the metabolism change in a person can change the seizure frequency and types they have.
