Sorry another foody question. Are certain spices good or bad for you? I enjoy Indian and Chinese food but don't want to over do it.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member My comment was general. Coeliac Disease is a different story and I did not reference that. I am aware that it may initially present as a neurological disorder or be complicated by neurological changes. It is associated with neuropathy, ataxia, dementia and seizure disorders. Villous atrophy impairs absorption of AEDs as well making seizure control harder.

I did not refer at all to Complex Partial/Focal Onset Impaired Awareness Seizures or indeed any other epilepsy seizure type or syndrome.

I have Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy, which is a syndrome. JME is characterised by the presence of Absence seizures (formerly Petit Mal), Myoclonic seizures, and generalised Tonic-Clonic seizures (formerly Grand Mal). I also am photosensitive and have Temporal lobe epilepsy (a type of Complex Partial seizure).

I am sorry if I touched a nerve. It was unintentional.

There are a lot of people that say that turmeric and curcumin can actually help reduce seizures and preclinical studies have indicated its beneficial effect for the treatment of epilepsy disorders. It also has shown to have neuroprotective properties.

There are a lot of studies being done on its affect on epilepsy, cancer, arthritis, dementia and inflammatory conditions. I use to take it in capsule form but it gave me heartburn so I fell out of the habit. Maybe its time to start again?

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member i am the raraty? my family has a illness called celiac disease. i cant have grains. i cant have wheat, rye, and barley. i have seizures from it. some spices contains msg (modified food starch) witch may or may not have wheat in it. a lot of spices and dressing contain wheat as fillers.
how can you say there is currently no evidence when i have complex partial seizures from food. that is evidence. sorry LesleighHart for the out burst. i am saying there is many types of seizures and excluding 1 is not fair to another with that type.

"There is currently no evidence that any type of food consistently triggers (sets off) seizures in people with epilepsy (except for rare types of ‘reflex epilepsy’ where seizures are triggered by eating very specific foods)."

"Although there is little evidence that a balanced diet has a direct effect on seizures, it provides essential nutrients and keeps our energy levels steady. A balanced diet may also help you to keep a regular sleep pattern and keep active, both of which are good for overall health. Getting enough sleep may help to reduce the risk of seizures for some people."

"The ketogenic diet is a medical treatment carried out under the supervision of a dietitian and an epilepsy specialist. It is a diet that should not be started unsupervised. At present the ketogenic diet is mostly used with children whose epilepsy is not responding to AEDs."

Darryl,
I used to love spicy food., It usually made me sweat 😓. I never thought about it being a trigger. I also ate Chinese quite often (in the past). I will add that I’ve recently changed my entire diet. Wow what a difference!
