Cannabis

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Last night a documentary on TV in the UK said cannabis could be beneficial to sufferers of epilepsy. Although not legally proven in the UK to be beneficial other parts of the world are using it. What do other sufferers think?

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member I don't personally use cannabis (note for others that it is only a portion of marijuana and is not the portion that makes your high or hallucination), but I have read the success stories from back when it was only legal in 2 states (others had it legal for medical use at that time, but the problem was in getting it to the state, since then Massachusetts has marijuana for recreational use, as well as, cannabis and marijuana for medical use (it is an aid for those with terminal cancer and the like to deal with the pain and severe depression from knowing that they have days, weeks, months or a few years left to live). Anyway, you had one parent who would move to Colorado with their young child to be able to be treated with cannabis to have a normal life because no other medication or treatments worked. These were cases where the little children were spending their whole day in a padded room and even wearing a helmet to reduce physical damage from their constant seizures.

The problem is that no enough people in the world are told that cannabis is NOT marijuana but rather a product extracted from marijuana. They are not getting these children "high" to deal with the seizures, but rather giving them an herbal treatment that can make them seizure-free. The major problem is that not enough medical insurance recognize it as such as even in the cases of those which do, the cost is still too much for many to be able to afford using it.

I take CBD oil(no THC) and find it helps. Less seizures and pain. If I miss a dose or two, I notice how much pain I’m in and get really awful headaches.

Good evening I know that we were discussing the use of CBC oil. I just thought that everyone should be aware that it’s not legal in all places and I have a great friend that graduated from West Point and his son is extremely autism and his family travels all over the world and they give him the oil and has noticed a lot milestones of improvement. The scared thing is that the laws say that they can go to jail for the abuse of their son by giving him oil. Their son could be put in foster care because they were doing the best thing medically for the child. In Georgia your allowed to have a certain amount; but no growers it’s illegal and to go across state lines it becomes federal. I just wanted everyone else to know that every place is different and can get ya in compromising situation quickly. I know that he and wife have doctors degrees and weighed out the use. I have one doctor for counseling and her daughter has seizures and to young developement body can not stand all the side effects of medication and started with the oil and noticeably different and healthier. Strange because they make a living from pharmacy and they have decided to break laws and help their child feel some what normal life and development at a young age of seizures disorder. Okay thanks again best regards Sue Anne

I had a friend who cannabis oil has greatly been beneficial here is his story.

Mr. Dude has a SEVERE seizure disorder. He has multiple short full tonic/clonic episodes every day. Since his diagnosis at 8 months old we have gone through 10 different combos of medications and the ketogenic diet. He spent his days excessively sleeping, stimulation set him off and he quickly lost all of his abilities (pushing with arms, eating/sucking, standing, minor head holding). We had to stop therapy, school visits and pretty much avoided leaving the house.

About 3 years ago the meds/diet combo nearly killed him. His liver was shutting down and all options were gone. Some meds can't be use ever again and the diet, that was working, was stopped because it harm's the liver. We went from 10-12 episodes per day to 50+ inside of a week.
To save his life we had to medicate him. He slept 20+ hours a say, he no longer did anything but stare & drool if he was awake, he wouldn't even track us with his eyes or cry out in pain & discomfort. We were doing everything we could medically and he spirit was drifting away into oblivion.

2.5 years ago the state of Idaho allowed a pharmaceutical company to open up a drug trial for LEGITIMATE - CBD oil. We begged our neurogist to get us in.

- He started the trial having up to 900 seizures a month. Given 1/4 of the weighted dose for 1 month.

- The next check-in he had approx 650 seizures. Up the dose to 1/2 the dose.

- the next checking it was 400 seizures. Upped to 3/4 dose.

- the next month 300 seizures. Upped to the full dose

TODAY Aiden averages between 150-200 seizure per month. He is off of 1 of his meds and at half doses for his other meds. He has a weaning schedule to remove ALL other meds except emergency and the CBD.

For the last 4 years I have not heard my son make these noises or interact in any way. Today I get the stinkface, the occasional mewing sound, purposeful sighs and also a cry if he's unhappy.

If anyone is on the fence with the medical use of marijuana you need to here this. I'm talking about working with an actual doctor, getting actually diagnosed and being followed up with regularly!

Please know our story. There will ALWAYS be abuse but that is NOT a reason to keep medicine out of the hands of those who need it. There is a God given purpose for this plant and for Aiden it is the greatest blessing. He's been given a new lease on an actual life!
