A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi. I’ve been taking lamictal Xr 400mg for past 9 years with few breakthrough seizures. I’ve had 3 in the past month. I looked at my labs from last year and they were a 9. Labs from few months ago was 7.1 and now from last week it’s 6.3. These are labs I’ve done through my PCP. I’m trying to get into an appointment with my neuro. Nothing really has changed in past year, weight, or additional meds. Has anyone experienced medication levels dropping for no reason ? The one thing I thought of but… read more

Hi, @A MyEpilepsyTeam Member .
When I visit my Dr. and we have talked about meds , and if there have been any changes with them and my seizures, she would decide whether or not I have to get my blood levels checked . Then at next appt. we would discuss the results and decide where to go from there.

Hi all. I've had Epilepsy for 42 years & I've been in the care of the local Epilepsy Unit for 20years In 20 years I've never had any serum levels done My GP tests my cholesterol levels ( if I ask) The GP thinks it's the hospital s job & vice versa When j asked ,having seen many y people on here mention serum levels I mentioned it& was told they didn't do them routinely At my last appointment a different consultant said Yes ,he could arrange to have my serum levels tested ,gave me a pack to give my practice nurse to send back to the hospital lab to test my Lamotrigine levels ( I'm on a few other meds as well )

Even though nothing has changed there is a possibility something has, and that is your metabolism. And as your metabolism changes sometimes meds may need to be adjusted as well. Talk to your doctor. Find out for yourself from websites if the meds you are taking may be canceling out the other due to side effects. Take care.

Based on weight I doubt I’ll be overdosing anytime soon. Lol. Sorry to hear after 5 meds it’s still a struggle for you. I just hate the thought of adding meds because of side effects or increasing dosage because of side effects too. Just so frustrated.

Thanks !

From my experience, my body would tolerate and get use to the dosage , because of this, the strength of my medication starts weakening and my level will go down. That’s when my Dr. decides to start upping my dose. But if my level keep going down sow many time , it time to change and find a different medication.

Your not crazy. It sounds like your going through the same thing I’ve been through. Your brain and body have tolerated the meds . If your level keep lowering after every increase , then it’s time to change. Plus your body weight can handle a certain max dose of the medication . If they go any higher , It can cause you to overdose on that med.

You may have to just change to a different medication. Or add another medication with your Lamictal.

For myself I’m on five different meds and they still aren’t fully controlling my seizures.
