If I Wind Up In The Hospital Because Of The Covid-19, Will The Staff Know When To Give Me My Epilepsy Meds On Time?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I had Temporal Love Surgery back in 2006 but the Neurologist ICU was full after the surgery was completed (7 hours). They thought I was doing good so put Me in General Recovery. The Nurse gave pain killer Meds but no Epilepsy Meds. Wound up with 4 Tonic Clonic seizures right away!

I’m a retired Registered Nurse. We had a mandatory hour window to dispense patients meds.
Patients may take their meds at home...hypothetically at 8 A.M and 8PM....we used to follow hospital protocol for med times. Twice a day=10 A.M & 10 P.M. Three times a day= 10A.M., 4PM, and 10PM. 4 times a day = 10,2,6 10. Patients on pain meds are priority one. Given when prescribed and needed.
Please understand, nurses usually have 10 patients on a medical surgical ( non- I U) to give meds out to. I had SO many times where the 2nd nurse called out sick or transferred to another floor) so, I could potentially be taking care of 20 patients with 1 nursing assistant. Running around like a crazy person. Safely making damn sure everyone got their meds. Also, please understand, some patients need I.V. meds. This takes more time.
If you miss your epilepsy meds by 2 hours, I doubt it would cause a seizure. 12 hours is another story. If you notice you haven’t gotten your meds past the hours I listed above, just ask the nurse. Also, if you are THAT concerned, ask the doctor to write special orders and times. Nurses must follow those orders.
Moral of this story...be patient...you’re not the ONLY patient. ❤️

PatriciaLivengood:
THIS is why I stress that when you check in you must stress that "I HAVE
EPILEPSY !" Tell them they have to place you in the Neuro-ICU ward
as you can't go in Regular ICU.
AS David said It was the staff's fault & NOT yours !!!

Hi @A MyEpilepsyTeam Member some nice comments from your friends around the world. What I have done (because it worries me) is print a list of all my medication, their dose, when I take them and what I take them for. It also lists my home address, medical number and next of kin. I keep it in my pocket so at any time if I have a seizure I can give it to the ambulance of hospital staff so they know my medication. As we all know when you have a seizure you can't communicate so if I can give them this print out it is reassurring. Take care.

Marlene,
It's up to the Person Who can let this covid19 "freak" Them out. I do have other chronic conditions, one that I got last year. My list if You like is; Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Ramsey Hunt Syndrome and Epilepsy. I don't stress out on anyone of these little green Gremlins. Instead, I look into ways that could help with research being done on these things. I'm always Proactive, not the opposite direction...
