Mood Changes Easily

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
York Haven, PA

Hi,

Over the past 4-5 months my mood easily changes. If I'm hanging out with friends I will walk away and sit alone or when I'm with my girlfriend I will randomly get upset and start crying. I will say I was drinking before this and that was probably not a good thing. I stopped drinking since I am on medication for my seizures. Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations?

Thanks

Most of the meds for epilepsy can cause anxiety and or depression. That is the one big side effect. I have it and take a med for it.

Yeah, I was on Trileptal, Keppra and Dilantin at one time. Funny thing is I didn't cry much if any before I had brain surgery but I'm making up for it now. When they removed my amygdala, I started crying about everything.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member That is a good way to look at it. There are times where I feel so down but it could be a lot worse.

Between the side-effects of drugs and our overall battle with epilepsy, you will find times when you just get so depressed that you can't hide your feelings. The best thing to do is find a way to develop a positive attitude. After all, if you take a good look around you, you'll see how things could be worse but they're not.
