Do You Ever Just Hide Your Epilepsy For As Long As You Can?
I just moved to a new state and of course a new job. I hate explaining i have epilepsy because you just get treated differently. Also, dont feel answering questions and going over my life story.
I dont hide it. Aint scared, but ill keep it short and sweet for em so they dont muck it up. i.e. "Hey Im epileptic, in case of a seizure put me on my side and DONT CALL 911 those rides are expensive" 30 secs with boss done. Be proud to be purple! But If they stary prying you dont have to tell them what you dont wanna.
No. I am open about it. I've worked for banks, as a loan officer, for a pharmacy, for Goodwill, a print shop, and a school bus company. The very first thing that I did when I was interviewed was tell them that I had epilepsy but that it was well under control (I'm able to drive). You are who you are----don't hide who you are. If you hide your true self, then one day your true self will come out and everyone will find out that you've lied to everyone all along. You will lose all of the friends that you made at work. Well, you might need those people some day. Be honest.
I do. I only have them at night. So my job doesn't know. I don't feel comfortable to tell people.
Anytime I started a new job, I kept it to myself. When I made friends with co-workers, I told them first. The boss was told after the first seizure during work time.
I totally understand . It feels totally pointless to explain the situation to people when they have no care in the world anyways . People act like it’s the common cold or a flu and it’s not . This shit is traumatic so I don’t talk about it to anyone unless they are either around when it’s happening because I might look abnormal from their perspective and they don’t know why or I tell people who really wanna listen and help come up with a positive solution . Other than that . People are not helpful in the real world . That’s why I came on here because people actually show support and actually know what u are going through . Anytime you feel sad, down, or even not feeling healthy it’s better to ask for advice from us that know what to do then some random person who might trigger the seizure even more from causing the frustration of not understanding that you may need a quiet space, some air, stop for water, etc. what people don’t understand the most is that we are not complaining for the fuck of it . We complain because we feel uncomfortable and triggered and the people we may surround ourselves with don’t have the first clue how bad loud sounds can be, being hot asf and stuck in a car, or even something as simple as the music being up too high . If they don’t care and u feel like u can’t share with them and they cant be around u on ur worst days then they don’t deserve to be around on ur best days . Family or not
