Sense Of Smell And Taste Affected By Temporal Lobe Epilepsy?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Does anyone who have temporal lobe epilepsy find that it changed their sense of smell and taste
For as long as i can remember my whole life i had no sense of smell, and a really distorted sense of taste. My first noticed episode that was diagnosed later as a seizure was when i was 16. With fronto-temporal lobe epilepsy. Since being diagnosed with epilepsy i had wondered if the two issues were connected at all. A couple years ago i started having episodes where i developed a sense of smell, and… read more

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member studies actually show that seizures can alter the brain in different ways over time, ( rewiring the brain) and some repetitive or prolonged seizures can lead to neuron death. Not everyone may notice changes, some might.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member people unfortunately can have status epilepticus with meds if the meds are not the right ones for that person, or of someone has drug resistant epilepsy. However i am one example of brain being rewired after seizures without being zombie like. There was a year where my seizures changed types, frequency, severity. And through that time the way my body percieved temperatures changed, the coordination on my left side changed, how i process information has changed, and how i focus has changed. I have learned new techniques so i can still proceed with living and functioning, but i do so differently than before the seizures effected me differently. And the neurolofist has agreed eith me that it was the seizures, not just regular life changing the brain. Other people i know have noticed changes in their brain as well, not everyone does, but sometimes seizures do alter the brain. Ot doesnt mean that it goes to the point of completely non functioning, or zombie like, thats usually reserved for the uncontrolled seizures.

I have epilepsy in general, maybe I develop temporal lobe when my sense of smell started going away.

Maybe that's why my taste is different and I have no sense of smell except when I smell cardboard before I have a seizure.
