Has Anyone Ever Read The Children Books About Epilepsy?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is in 1st grade and is getting very good at reading. I’ve seen children book about epilepsy and how they teach kids about it. He knows I have epilepsy. He knows to call/get help, but now that he is getting older I believe this is a good way to learn more about what’s going on. He has never had to experience one of my episodes by himself and I hope he never does but if he ever does maybe knowing more can help not only me but help him not be so scared if something happens.

Hey Chelsey, the information that Mr. Randy, Mrs. Leslie, and Mrs. Dana said something that is very true about ask the Librian at school or at the public library in your area. All libraries have to have a reference area of specializing on all illnesses.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member . My mom graduated before the 70s and they still didn’t have that class. Im talking about present day.

When I was in Jr.high school, there was Health class. We carried a health book everyday to class. It had good chapters of most subjects in it. From Oral and body hygiene, Biology of the body, diseases and other subjects. They had three Pages worth on Epilepsy. It was very generic. It was basically explaining what epilepsy is and a little about the seizures. It was very upsetting for me.

That’s why they need real education on Epilepsy. Not just three pages. It very frustrating when, not all the nurses and Dr.s fully understand Epilepsy.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member,
All teachers and schools need to have education on epilepsy in Health class.

I think it's good that they have these books out but we made sure to teach my siblings even my younger sisters cuz they had to witness them as kids but they never got scared cuz they have always been around it

Yeah over 11 years ago when I was in high school there was a little bit more than just three pages on epilepsy and stuff like that but the cool thing for me was that we had to pick a nervous system disorder to do a report on so I chose epilepsy which is the disorder I have of course and I actually did a full report on it and everything that I knew detail wise but I also added some stuff in it about what happened in the past in history wise and I think that helped out a lot of my friends understand me better because I actually talked to my teacher to say is it okay that I say that I have it and my teacher said yeah since it's you telling them you have it you're allowed to say it in the report so I put it in my report and I think it made the people in class pay attention better also but it was also one of the easiest reports of my high school years since I knew pretty much everything.
