Does Your Child Have Anger Issues On Keppra?
My child has had 3 seizures. 2 of them were when he was young. He has not been diagnosed with epilepsy or any seizure disorder. He was put on Keppra after the 2nd seizure as they were unprovoked and pretty bad seizures. After a couple years on Keppra, with the doctors support as well as ours we decided to ween him of his medication. It was latterly a day after his last dose of Keppra he had another seizure. He recovered and of course we put him back on Keppra. He doesn’t ever have seizures while… read more
Thank you for the response Becky. This is the first time I’ve tried to use one of these forums. I will have to ask my wife what they could switch him too. Our doctor acted like there is another medication that would work for him and keep him from having side effects but they always start children on Keppra. They actually want him to start the B6 before switching his medication. Sounds like the alternative is hard to get and or maybe expensive. (I would pay whatever it’s takes) He seems to sleep fine but maybe he doesn’t and that’s what causes his rage and he has a hard time communicating that. We are going to try the B6 and see if that will change anything. I understand that it will take time. I am a tough, big, Minnesota guy and it is terrifying seeing your boy on the gurney having a Grand mal seizure, not breathing, being intubated and airlifted to children’s hospital.
Hello! My son just got out of the hospital after having status epilepticus. He never had a seizure before this. He is also on keppra and hasn't had more since coming home (knock on wood) it is paired with the b6 and he seems pretty much like his normal self. He has adhd so he does already have symptoms associated with that but he seems to tolerate the keppra very well with the b6 added. I hope this helped ❤️ Hang in there
I don’t have children, but i’ve taken Keppra myself and HATED it. I was not myself, very angry annd anxious. It also made my seizures a lot worse. This was a few years ago
Not just kids, but also adults . Keppra can change someone’s emotions and behaviors . Making them into someone you don’t know.
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , You’ll find mixed reviews on here about Keppra but most of them are from adults using it. I can’t give you any info on how it effects children but I have found on this site & by looking for info on my own that Keppra has side effects that can cause mood swings, anger issues & make people not act like themselves & they call that Keppra Rage. It can also make you very tired or make you have trouble sleeping. I’m 44 & I took Keppra for about a month around June 2019 & it made me so tired that I had to take a nap every day & eventually I started having trouble sleeping at night & so I got off it. You’ll find some team members on here didn’t like the side effects & so they got off it & others found that Keppra was the only thing that worked for them & so they put up with the side & others don’t have any problems with Keppra. It’s likely the Keppra that is causing your son to get into fights & such things & not act like himself at school. So you might ask the doctor if there’s a different medication that he could be put on. Don’t hold me to it but I want to say that some were put on Briviact when the Keppra didn’t work. You could try going to the “Q & A” section & then click on the round then circle ⭕️ & a search box will come up & you could type in “Keppra” & see what’s been discussed about it in the past in the “Q & A” section. For all I know Briviact might not be meant for kids. But it sounds like your son is reacting to the side effects in Keppra. I hope y’all can find something that works for him. Good luck. Your friend in Texas, Becky
