Did Any Of You Felt Worse After Starting AED Medication? What Did You Do?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Somwhere. EA

Hello everyone, the title of the question is self explanatory, basically 3 days ago I finally took the decision to start a treatment against epilepsy after many years of going without antiepileptic medication and controlling my seizures by myself. I started taking Levetiracetam (some of you know it as Keppra). It was a medicine of my choice as I also have ADHD disorder and any other antiepileptic would worsen my attention deficit so actually my psychiatrist prescribed it to me because I refused… read more

I stopped all meds in 2012 as they had bad side effects or did not work, they want to start me back on keppra which I had already tried but I have refused. I am trying keto, ketovore, carnivore diet. Look up Dr Ken Berry first regarding the diet to stop seizures or just to help. I only have around 25 seizures a year from a blow to the head in 2004 but they have changed my life. I stopped driving & working and am hoping this ketovore diet works, I am now 61.

I started with seizures at 64. Refractory TLE that seems drug resistant. I’ve tried 6 different drugs. Keppra made me suicidal. I’m currently on clobazam. It worked great the fiat month but I’m back to 15-20 seizures per month. I just added cbd oil to the clobazam and so far it’s made a huge difference. I’ll know better in a month or so. Good luck

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member, sorry for the mistake. I thought you were already taking an ADHD. But if not, sound like Keppra is doing a number on you like me. Your doctor made a good move on holding off on the ADHD and see how Keppra works for you first. Doctor's will always start a patient out on Keppra first, why i couldn't tell you. The drug doesn't work for everyone. If it doesn't work, then you can try again until you get the right drug cocktail to control your seizure. I am sure you will do your best studying medicine. It would be nice to see someone with epilepsy to be a neuroscientist.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member That's what I thought too, maybe it takes time to get used to it. Anyway it seems to get a bit better, my myclonic seizures start to fade away which is good but my auras still are still present, I don't expect them to disappear instantly, but I just hope they don't get worse in time.
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member Thanks for your answer but you misunderstood me, I do not take ADHD medication yet, I am going to take it in the future. I just found out I have ADHD and my psychiatrist insisted I should first take antiepileptic drugs for my seizures and if all goes well then I can start taking medication for ADHD. So seizures are the first thing I should worry about. Anyway I see you mentioned the moody side effects of Keppra. Well let me tell you something, what you described as side effects is just my basic personality. I am like Bruce Banner "Always angry" :D. Basically I am the pure embodiment of frustration and rage, always been like this, and I wouldn't change a thing. I love who I am, and I believe this rage has always helped me to be a better person as I've always been incorruptible and righteous against all kinds of bad things in life. I do not feel any mental side effects of Keppra probably because there is no way I can be more angry than I already am (maybe it isn't humanly possible :D) but I will keep an eye for how I feel for now. But there is something that bothers me, I've researched more into meds and I found out that Levetiracetam might not be the best thing for Tonic seizures. Some research says it's as good as any other AED for that but some say it isn't. I know that tonic seizures are more rare than tonic-clonic so research in that matter is definitely lacking but I can basically experiment on myself to see it's effectiveness. I just hope it works because next year I intent to start to study medicine and become a neuroscientist, I have a score to settle against epilepsy and if I get the chance I will go full force against it. 😈

You might want to ask your doctor about another drug other than Keppra (The Rage). Keppra (The Rage) will give you side effects such as, aggression, depression, anger, anxiety and headaches. Just to name a few. What you may be experiencing is a conflict between your ADHD meds and Keppra. Levetiracetam is a generic version of Keppra. And have the same side effects of Keppra. I have taken it and it makes you moody as heck. I haven't heard of Valproate, but did find this, https://www.drugs.com/pro/valproate.html
I would not say this drug is the only one that will help you with your seizures. There are others out there. You and your doctor will have to find what medication will work with your ADHD meds. Hope you will find something soon.
