Has Anyones White Blood Count Dropped Below The Low Level 4.0? If So How Did You Take It?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

So, I'm currently having monthly blood tests to monitor medication levels in the blood after a recent increase. Based on my most recent blood test my WBC has dropped to 3.7 and the Neutrophils are now at 1.7 . It is well known that the medication (Tegretol) that I'm on can cause the WBC to drop in some cases.

Now I know these levels are not that low but the thing is I'm on this medication basically permanently until something changes so it's very likely that if it is dropping it will only get… read more

Currently, my seizures are basically non-existent apart from a lot of body jolts and limb jolts + when I worked it out I'm probably having at least one absent seizure a month. But it's very hard to keep track of the absence of seizures.

When my Neurologist first brought all this up the first thing that he mentioned was Keprra, then he made a list, and I think it went Keppra Depakote and ? something else.
So it is something that is being looked at but you have to way up the positive V the negative outcomes. Whether or not changing the med will lead to a good or bad outcome.

However........ Having said all this the majority of the time people over the age of 60 or once they have been on Tegretol for 25+ years will have to be taken off it due to the greater risk they will be at health-wise.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member Was the drop below the 4.0 level? To be honest I'm not sure whether I should be worried or not. The problem is that the doctor that I got the Blood test script from I had never been to before and I don't know whether she had done it so the Neuroligest would also be notified because his name is not on the script at all. The other issue she didn't really check anything apart from the AED levels. So I didn't find anything else out until I got the results on MHR.

I know what's going on the only thing I don't know is how bad it could get if nothing changes.

The other problem is I don't know how much the results will change in the next 3 weeks. I

I guess I should really ask is what is the best way to check that the neurologist will get these. I'm in Brisbane the same as you so I'm it's the same system.

It was recently noticed that my son had a drop in his white blood cell count. His specialist mentioned it but that was it. He has been on the medication since he was two. Here in Australia all blood tests are sent to those who are on the request form. Which means our Doctor and Neurologist both get results. If there is a problem we are contacted. The patient only sees the results if shown be the doctor until very recently when the pathology lab will send a sms tell you they are available for you to see. If your really worried see your General doctor and talk to him about your concerns and he will let you know if there is a need to mention it at your next specialist visit. Hope this is helpful.
