How Long Does Post Ictal State Last?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi, had an intense seizure yesterday, ictal state was 5 min entire thing was about 10 min. Slightly more than 24 hours and I am feeling better. Is this a normal timeframe for post ictal state?

It depends on what the seizure is because technically all seizures will have some length of a post-ictal for eg. I think a absence can either be instant of up-to 5 minutes Myoclonic is about the same then a Tonic clonic is anywhere from a few hrs to a day but some times it can be as much as 3 days to 1 week.

I have tonic clonic and I am in and out consciousness for 20-30 minutes. I don’t remember anything I have been told. Occasionally I will lose 10-15 minutes prior to the seizure. I usually don’t try to do anything for the next 24 hours.

I have had seizures that I need a few days to recover, the post ictal stage has changed a little for me. I used to not remember anything for hours after one but now it doesnt take as long. Sometimes just depening on the seizure I guess. Orange juice and carbs work great for me after a seizure! I hope this helped a little at least. Prayers for no more seizures

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member If you have any very bad headaches or dizziness after the seizure even if it takes a few hrs to happen this counts as the post ictal phase. When I had my last TC I was basically Post ictal for over a week.
