Keppra And Breaking Teeth?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Brisbane, AU

Hey,
has anyone who has been on Keppra had any issues with chipping teeth or with an unknown cause? I started it just over two months ago and within a month, I noticed my very front left tooth was chipped and today it happened to my front right. Origally I put it down to maybe a possible nocturnal seizure but this time my tooth basically broke with no explanation so I'm not sure what it could be.

Has anyone else had anything else like this happen while on Keppra?

Thanks.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , Dilantin is another seizure medicine that I have heard causes dental issues. My Dad took it & he had bad dental issues with it & I’ve read on this site that others have had dental issues with it as well. So at your appointment make sure to let them know what’s going on with your teeth or you might even contact them at the beginning of the week day so they can start taking care of the issue right away & see what they could recommend cause you don’t want the issue to get worse. Good luck. Your friend in Texas, Becky

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member Thanks for this. I see the ESN this week so I will just have to update my notes and bring it up in the discussion and see what comes of it.

I’ve never been on Keppra but I have been on Dilantin for 2 years approximately 18 years ago and it still causes dental problems. Were you ever taking Dilantin?? My teeth began falling out, and bone loss occurred in my gum line so it would take bone grafts and the removal of the remaining teeth (17) to begin to have dentures and a whole lotta money😩

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member Yes. I actually did up a report about how everything was going then my first appointment was cancelled. So I just have to add it in. There is actually quite a lot of information I have to take to the appointment.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member I already do all those things plus I see the dentist every 6 months. So my teeth are or were pretty well looked after. I never had this issue when I was on Tegretol It's only happened since this change.
