Does Anyone Experience Insomnia As A Side-effect Of Keppra (Levetiracetam)

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I can't take Epival because chronic diarrhea is a side effect. I'm a 75-year-old Caucasian woman with generalized 'absence status epilepticus.' There are few drug trials with older women included so I'm asking this community. I'm now taking 1500 mg/day Keppra plus the sleeping pill Mertazapine! Certainly NOT the answer.

It is. Check the Mayo clinic's website: Trouble sleeping is one of the common side effects. In addition, few studies have been done on the side effects of new AEDs on older women.

I was on Keppra a long time ago. Never had issues with sleeping.

I've been on all 14 meds for Temporal Lobe Epilepsy. Several made me so overtired I was unable to get to sleep, and lack of sleep has always been a trigger for me.

I’ve had insomnia since childhood. Seizures happen during sleep and wake me up.. I didn’t know what it was then but I do now. Still wrestle with insomnia. Lack of sleep equals seizures for me.

Great! I'll speak to my neurologist about Briviact. Keppra side-effects are awful.
