Chronic Migraines

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Bristol, UK

Hi, I have chronic daily headaches with chronic migraines about twice a week. I have tried most painkillers and recently been to the pain clinic. I am now waiting for a nerve block in the back of my head then acupuncture to follow. I go numb down my left side which the doctor said is a contribution to myofascial. Should acupuncture work as there is risks because of my epilepsy.

And is she a specialist (neurologist) rather than a general practice doctor?

They medical profession knows a lot more about migraines than they did 40 years ago when I was having them. Of course, I was not taken to anyone except for our pediatrician for a diagnosis of mine because of the poor medical insurance that we had back then and household economics were improved from 8 years before that but not enough for me to see a specialist. Thus, I knew no details at all about my migraines. I knew they were migraines because my older brother was very familiar with migraines and too many other health issues.

However, from the link that I shared with you, a 21st Century doctors should be able to tell more details like (below is just a piece of the information on the page that link will bring you to):

What are the symptoms of migraines?
There are four different phases of migraines. You may not always go through every phase each time you have a migraine.:

Prodrome. This phase starts up to 24 hours before you get the migraine. You have early signs and symptoms, such as food cravings, unexplained mood changes, uncontrollable yawning, fluid retention, and increased urination.
Aura. If you have this phase, you might see flashing or bright lights or zig-zag lines. You may have muscle weakness or feel like you are being touched or grabbed. An aura can happen just before or during a migraine.
Headache. A migraine usually starts gradually and then becomes more severe. It typically causes throbbing or pulsing pain, which is often on one side of your head. But sometimes you can have a migraine without a headache. Other migraine symptoms may include
Increased sensitivity to light, noise, and odors
Nausea and vomiting
Worsened pain when you move, cough, or sneeze
Postdrome (following the headache). You may feel exhausted, weak, and confused after a migraine. This can last up to a day.

Your doctor has not shared with you the details about migraines?

Here is a link to the US National Library of Medicine that can provide you with most of this information: https://medlineplus.gov/migraine.html

Was your doctor able discern the cause of your migraines?

Wow! Those are powerful migraines that all that must be tried. I am so sorry to hear that you have had to endure them. I hope it does. Are you asking about the level of risk or was this already explained by the specialist doctor?
