My refractory sz have been a challenge but I was told memory problems. Went to a clinic , The Neurologist said you are having sz in front of me. You need a change of medication. That helped! I worked in a Dementia unit before I had my children 20 years ago. Do yoga, puzzles, crossword puzzles! Stimulate yourself! It’s helped me! I wish you the very best!

I have had epilepsy since I was 5. I'm going to turn 66 the end of May. I had lots of testing done after I had a bad stretch of uncontrollable seizures in my 40s. I have generalized epilepsy. After the testing I was hung out to dry. My company put me on long term disability and retired me since I had enough years with them. They did pay a company to do all my paperwork for ssdi so I was grateful for that. I did very poorly on the testing I found out. Ow after my stroke I had to take those tests again. Needless to say I my memory was rated serious cognitive moderate and mild on some other stuff i dont rememberwhat it was. But after working with them in therapy for all those months I moved up a level on both so they were very pleased. They tricks they taught me on what to do to help myself worked great. Now I noticed that if I don't do them I don't have the same results. Backsliding! So I have to be sure to use them. As they explained it to me I was already having problems before just from the epilepsy and the stroke just amplified it. The trick is WRAP W- WRITE IT DOWN, R- REPEAT IT, A- ASSOCIATE IT P- PICTURE IT. It takes practice but it works. I have a notebook to write thing I think are important to remember I hahave a calendar book that gives me the whole month and than each individual day. They were cheap from Amazon and help keep you organized and schedule things. They want it on paper not on your phone so you are writing it, not a quick jot on a computer screen .I hope this info helps anyone who needs it for memory issues!

Refractory Epilepsy can be a precursor to dementia. Hope you get the seizures checked out by an epilepsy specialist. I have had seizures for 18 years and while I don't (yet) have dementia, I continue to struggle with cognitive decline. Best wishes to you!

I believe that it is true. Those who have never been able to get their seizures somewhat controlled, are more susceptible to dementia

I worked at Yale School of Medicine. Dept of Neurology. I'm still in touch with some of my homies from up in New Haven.

Other than memory loss what were the effects?

As I stated meds and seizures can cause those for people with epilepsy. I have both epilepsy and non-epileptic seizures. I get the best of both worlds. Are there other symptoms or anything felt? It was probably just meds and seizures though. The questions asked could help w/contributing factors.
