Can You Become Tolerant To Carbamazepine?
I was just wondering if anyone has experienced their seizure medication suddenly stop working so well. I feel so down and just stuck as I don't know where to go from here. What happens when your medication stops working? Are there alternative therapies to medication and if so how would I go about being referred for them? I just want to be seizure free again as I am miserable.
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member It can depend on the health system you are in. If you are in a good Public system, they most likely have a epileptologist on the health care team that works behind the scenes. They would have a meeting once a week and the epileptologist is normally apart of these meetings. This is how it works in Aus. You can request to see one if you really want to or see one privately but if the decisions made by the Neurologist are guided by a epileptologist then you may not need to see an epileptologist directly. That is if the system you're in works like that.
I was on carbamazepine for over 30 years in the past. It worked well and even though an older medication, it is one of the better ones. Since trying 9 others I still have seizures.
Give self time to adjust to changes meds make to avoid seizures. My cuz 1st month Keppra told me hated it. Wife puzzled cause no more seizures. Saw him 2 months later told me he loved it. Has been seizure free over 5 years now. Also told me to avoid sites like this many negative posts to scare or depress him.
Hi there, thank you so much for your insight. I do take magnesium, vitamin d, vitamin b, vitamin b12 and cod liver oil tablets everyday as well as my medications. I just wish decent supplements were cheaper. I try and stock up when holland and barrett are having a penny sale or buy one get one free.
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member I would tell your Neurologist this. If the Keppra starts giving mental side effects and you feel it will only get worse, then you probably not be able to take it. Generally, whenever you start a new med or change to a different med. The side effects will generally get stronger - reach a peak- then go back down to a normal level, but if it is affecting mental health already then you would need to tell the Neurologist.
