Does Anyone Have Any Advice On An Epilepsy Monitoring Unit Visit With An EEG?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Los Alamitos, CA

I am going to be at Mayo Clinic for four days to monitor seizure-like episodes and record everything happening. I am going to be taken off medication and be in a bed with only a TV available. I am bringing a laptop, book, and multiple things to do. Has anyone done this before? Does anyone have any recommendations and advice on what would be a good idea to do or bring?

I tried this years ago at a different hospital when my seizures weren't as bad but I didn't have one in the time frame. My… read more

When I had my last eeg and I was in the hospital for a week, I brought some puzzle books, yarn and patterns along with the hooks and knitting needles, my phone. I kept myself busy.

First thing before doing the impatient EEG , I would pack an activity bag.
1. Reading book
2 puzzle book
3. Tablet/ipad , travel game device , a Nintendo DS
4. Snacks for late munchies
5. Soda/pop or a drink of liking.’
( NOT alcohol )
6. A deck of playing cards
Something to entertain yourself in the my room

The Epilepsy Units I’ve experienced, felt safe and caring.

The one I was at , the EEG was connected to a long thick cord, so we can leave my rooms .

They expected me to be active and not stay in my room all day. There were videos cams all around the unit. They had a leisure / entertainment room. I can visit others who are in the room, play games, watch tv and even eat.

Besides all that they staff would decrease my meds by so much everyday. They want to increase the chance of seizures. They would my blood pressure and temp every so often and Stobe light tests often. If they didn’t think I was active that day , they would at least take me for a walk around the Unit.

Those are the many things I experienced during my inpatient EEG

I just finished one I n December and they told me to be active while having my test. I had no seizures, only 2 slight auras. One of my meds is being decreased slowly and then off that med. We’ll see what happens next.

Hi everyone! Thank you for all your help! They kept me on my meds, but they did find the location of my brain where my seizures are coming from.

I was able to have three seizures in the four days I was there which is an accomplishment since I had zero in ten days last time. (Of course). I just didn't sleep and they happened. The staff were all so nice and the best.

I was placed on Aptiom and still only have the side effects. It's not the best, but after I've tried so much, it's worth a shot.
