Is It True That People Can Trigger Their Seizures With The Vagus Nerve .. I Was Told By Sons Old Neuro That He Was Causing His Own Seizures

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Do you believe that to be true and is it factual and possible? I mean why would anyone purposefully and intentionally want to do that.. I mean seizures are not fun and I’m sure if people could stop them for good they would… my son holds his breathe and his lips turn blue I even posted a video of what his type looks like on my page …

Given that epilepsy is so broad it wouldn't surprise me if it was true but given the Vagus nerve is normally used to stop seizures this sounds like a very rare thing.

There are ways to slightly stimulate the vagus nerve like when Humming, Chanting and Gargling but you cannot stimulate it into a seizure. It’s suppose to do the exact opposite. I also have a vns but it’s not helpful.

I’ve never heard of that. Triggering seizures by messing around withe the Vagus nerve. It doesn’t seem possible. From the diagram I saw , the vagus nerve extends from the brain, centering thru out the areas of the torso of our body.

I don’t believe it’s the VNS triggering your son’s seizures. I think the VNS isn’t working for him.

I had the VNS From 2005 - 2010 and it didn’t work for me. But in 2022 , I had the DBS ( deep brain stimulation ) put in.. They use Leads ( wire like ), like the VNS, except they are placed in different areas of the brain. They both work similar too.

Since my DBS it’s worked well. I still have seizures , but they have decreased.

There is also the the RNS treatment. I hear of good results with that. That all I can say about that.
