Carbamazepine And Pineapple

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Southampton, UK

I've been tucking into some fresh pineapple and it's beautiful but then I remembered how acidic it is. My epilepsy nurse has told me to always stay away from grapefruit which is no problem as its gross 😂. Does anyone know if pineapple can effect the way carbamazepine works and escitalopram which is an anti depressant?

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member Grapefruit contains a natural acid and the acid doesn't go well with a lot of the AED meds. I'm pretty sure the best way to describe it is having a med that is known to interact with your AED. Thats what the grapefruit does.

I love pineapple and it's never been an issue. Grapefruit I love as well, I just pace myself. I know that won't be an issue for you as you wouldn't drink or eat it anyway.🤐

It can mess with the carbamazepine so take grapefruit sparingly.
