Next Week, I Will Be Going In To Do An Adult Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (AEMU) For Video Monitoring. Has Anyone Done This? What Can I Expect?
I have. I really enjoyed the experience. It was an opportunity to find out what I was like as a person "without meds" in a safe environment. Just don't hold it against yourself. I found out I really wasn't this slow... or tired... or dizzy. It's just all the meds I'm on. Yes it's frustrating to note this, but also nice at the same time. Nice in the way to know the problem really isn't me.
I’ve done it 4 different times. Before your inpatient EEG , you may want to pack an activity bag. With things to help keep yourself entertained, while in your room. Things like
Playing cards
Book or magazine to read
Laptop computer / IPad or tablet / hand held video games
( like Gameboy and ect )
Bring snacks for munchies and cravings
Bring pop, juice or something you like to drink ( if the allow it ) .
During the EEG you will be monitored everyday. Every so often , they might do a Strobe Lite Test
When I was at the seizure unit , they would decrease my medication dose by so much. The Doctor and staff wanted me to keep active they may come and have me walk around some every hour or hang out in the leisure room. Talk or interact with others , if they are in the leisure room too.
I never had any big seizures during my EEGs. One of them was a surgery. So I got an RNS.
I have had 2 video EEG'S years ago. 5 days each time. It was rather boring. Back then only had crossword puzzles and a small tv to watch. Occasionally a nurse would play cards with me. I would ask your doctor what forms of entertain you are allowed to bring with you.
Yes i have a dozen times. Not scary. More annoying. I found it to be very itchy. I was pulling the electrodes off.
