Daughter's 16 Year Old Friend Just Started Having Seizures. MRI's Show No Source.
What does one say to a doctor that tells you, "I can't find any reason why you're having seizures". That's what her doctor said.
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , They could look for a different Neurologist for a second opinion. If they haven’t done an in hospital video EEG, where they stay in the hospital for a few days, they could request that. I began having seizures in 2nd grade after hitting my head on the monkey bars but no one knows for sure if I got them from that, my Dad or both. My Dad had bad Grand Mal seizures & his didn’t start till after my parents were married & they don’t know what caused his to start. Some might be diagnosed with Epilepsy but doctors might not know the exact cause, like my Dad, but they can do EEGs & possibly tell you what type of Epilepsy & seizures you have. In 2019 I did a 5 day in hospital video EEG when I began seeing my current Neurologist & since my seizures aren’t as frequent or severe as some peoples, I didn’t have any seizures while there (a week later I did) but the Neurologist said that while I slept the EEG showed mostly Focalized seizure activity but some Generalized seizure activity. Good luck to your daughter’s friend & hope the doctor can find out what’s going on & find the right treatment for her. Your friend in Texas, Becky
Epilepsy is a condition caused by irregular brain activity. Some people are prone to seizures because they were born with an abnormal brain structure. Others develop epilepsy after a head injury, tumor, stroke, or infection. These are not all the possible causes of epilepsy. In some people, the cause is unknown or refractory. I have focal impaired awareness seizures; unknown cause began age 29. And mine are drug resistant, too. I'm on several meds now but have tried so many. It's frustrating to say the least! Educate yourself on epilepsy, live a healthy lifestyle, know your seizure triggers and find a great epileptologist to find a new normal. The doctor is best to guide you through this journey, as well as supporters on this blog. But remember, you're not alone and epilepsy does not have to rule your life.
Thanks for the hug. I just had an appointment with my Neurologist. I am fine, she is not changing any meds or dosages. She agrees Osteoperosis was caused by meds Phenobarbitol and Zarontin. I was diagnosed at 7, so I have been taking all kinds of meds, dosages, and combinations. I just turned 72 on July 23.
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member I'm assuming your daughter's friend saw her GP. If an MD can't find a reason for a known issue they should've referred her to a specialist (neurologist or epileptologist) is this case. Get a 2nd opinion and workup. An MRI will only present the physical. EEG will be necessary to seizure activity & lab work could be run at the same time.
I'm surprised they didn't do any lab work to rule out much of the physiological.
Praying for your daughter's friend
You need a Neurologist or Epileptologist who is very observant. They should clearly say what is happening, and what may happen. I agree a second opinion is needed. I was treated for Breast Cancer. One of the meds made both Chemotherapy and Radiation not effective. They found Onfi. Not yet approved by the FDA I bought it from Canada. Then I went through the treatments successfully a second time
