For Those Of You Who Have Ever Had An VNS Implant, Did You Think It Made A Difference And Was Worth The Cost?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been dealing with focal seizures since 2020, handling them with medication management. I thought I had finally found a good combo of meds that worked until around May of this year until the seizures started coming back even more than before. Within the past month, I've started having them even more than that.

I'm tired of dealing with trial and errors of medications and was reading about VNS ... and looking at the cost. 😶For those who have had it, is it worth it?

I had the VNS implant and it didn't do anything. It was set to send out the electrical impulse to intercept and stop seizure. Yes, I did have a magnet that could turn it on and send out that impulse whenever I would have auras to attempt to stop. I believe since I don't have auras I did not know when to use the magnet and set off the VNS to stop seizures. It may have done so sometimes since it went off every five minutes but I'm sure many probably sneaked thru to cause seizures. If you do have auras I'd say try it. I say that because I had no effects good or bad and it seemed to me a pretty simple surgery.

It didn’t work well for me. Doesn’t mean it didn’t work for others .
I now have the DBS ( deep brain stimulation ) implant and works great for me.

They happen even when it is not going off, the only difference when it goes off is that it makes it harder to breathe or talk

I once had a VNS but didn’t see a slight improvement so I had another surgery getting it removed
